RCM Automotive has some and pretty much everyone here that does their own 60K have a shim (or two dozen) laying around.

If you're looking for a particular size, it's easy to post a request.

go to a local motorcycle dealership. 80's bikes used the same shims as the sho. If they are cool about it they will just exchange shims for you like mine does

Or any Yamaha 29mm shims can be bought at your local Yam dealer.

They fit in older Yamaha motorcycles , sometimes they carry these used in their shop.

Note that these shims only have increments of 50 instead of 25. Ex: 240 = 2400 and 245 = 2450 , and 242.5 doesnt exist in the Yam bikes.

Yes the core is a lot (we need to make sure we get them back) but it will save a lot of time and hassle. You may never know what shims you will need and you may not know what shims they have on hand. Also they are only 50 increments. Also the kit includes the needed tools. You do need the valve adjustment tools to do the job.

Also the dealer will charge you $5 a shim.

If time is an issue we can work with you on it. We just can't have people sitting on them for months.

I just ended up ordering the kit from you guys yesterday. I don't mean to pick on you guys (I also made a post about finding intake couplers besides sho source, lol) I understand the core charge, you guys want collateral in case things are lost, damaged, not returned, etc. I was just worried about getting the time because School is starting for me next week, but after looking in the service manual and online the valve shim replacement seems pretty strait forward.

Its is straight forward. I can do a valve adjustment in a day. The time consuming part depends on how many shims need adjusting.

If you do decide to go the Motorcycle Shop way, keep in mind that there is also a 29.6mm version that is used in a lot of bikes. Some shops can't tell the difference, so be carefull.

Yamaha big v motorcycles of the same era have a dimesionally compatible shim, maybe a better part, but surly more$$ from a motor cycle dealer. Toyota shared some valve train parts with the SHO I know stem seals interchange.
