My right front wheel bearing went bad and it rocks pretty bad. My shop quoted me $220 for 2.8 hours of labor. When I asked, they said they would replace the bearing (un-press & press) not the whole assembly. Does this sound reasonable or it just darn right outrageous? Do both sides need done at the same time, or is replacing one ok? Need this do before I get an alignment.

Thanks David

Thats reasonable. Its a PITA on gen 1/2's. You can get away with one side at a time here too... No need to do both.

About what it should be, given they have to take the hub asm off the car, press out the old brg, press in the new brg, plus charge you $30+ for the new brg.

Make sure they do not use a Timken bearing - lots of issues w/ very short life on the Timken bearings on the front of SHOs....

I went 2 for 5 on the wheel bearings... only ones I could find were Timken or BCA... both looked identical.... but if a shop does it and it fails soon, you can always take it back.. let them do it again.

that sounds about right...

I remember when i went to good year in my gen 2 for an alignment, they told me i had a bad front passenger wheel bearing. I told them to do the alignment anyways. As they were doing the alignment I asked the guy how much it would cost for them to do the bearing, and he said, "what is it a Taurus?, it is about $120", then he looked again and said "Oh its An SHO, well that changes everything" looked again at the screen, and i saw it, then he said "$250". That is when i did it myself.

If the hub shaft has any out of round condition from the old bearing going out, it will seriously shorten the life of the new bearing. If the old hub is good, you can safely re-use it.
