I was wondering if I could go with a brand like Pioneer, Sony, Blaupunkt, you know, the cheaper 2-ways off Ebay for like $30 a pair? Would it sound better than 14 yr old FORD speakers doh ? B

Thanks,
Anthony burnout

Bang for buck-wise, I prefer Pioneer. Not the best, but also far from being the worst.
I especially like the mids and highs from their four-ways.
Their power handling ratings are grossly overrated, however, the sensitivity is high. That makes them more efficient.
If money wasn't an issue though, I would get some Infinitys.

hmmm,

i think i'm the only person that will say this. unless you are going to blow LOTS of dough and revamp the whole system, i'd stick with the ford/jbl speakers if you have the jbl option. if not, you can buy it pretty cheap from others on this group.

given, i'm not the iasca car audio competition sort of guy. but, i am an audiophile as far as my home system is concerned. mcintosh, conrad-johnson, theta, apogee, B&W, adcom, etc.

my car stereo consists of the 1992 jbl option. everything i stock except for the clarion 635 had unit. sounds pretty dang nice. not nearly as good as my home system, but definately lots better than many stock systems.

jbl did a real nice job with this stereo IMHO. only problem is that you have to use the stock amps as you will blow the speakers with anything else. which is fine as the weakest link in the stock system proves to be the headunit. just a crappy fomoco unit. with a decent aftermarket headunit, the whole system comes alive.

see ya,
Robby

I had some Blaupunkt 4 way 6x9 ODx694's that i got for $60, off the stock amp with a headunit these speakers sounded amazing. I recommend blaupunkts for the rear speakers (6x9's) and a pair of infinity reference 605cs components up front (you can probably find them for $60 on ebay). I ended up getting a set of phoenix gold 165 xs components that i custom installed in the 6x8 location and gave my 6x9's to a friend (who later left them outside and they got ruined...), and to my amazement the blaupunkts sounded better than the pg components (i wish i hadnt given them away).

If you wire in some capacitors for pioneer 2-ways you should have no problem with them (they dont seem to handle low frequencies very well). I would recommend using 200mf capacitors (200hz high pass) for the front set and 270mf (150hz high pass) for the rear set and you can crank it up without too much distortion.

Hope it helps,
Mike

i also had at one time the blaupunkt overdrive 6x9s in my '93 then when i got my '90 i get the blaupunkt overdrive 5x7s, both were really nice speakers. they are dvc, not a common thing to see in coax speakers. i actually still have the 6x9s if anyones interested.
