Sound is not an issue just looking at the most effective flowing exhaust size. I was thinking 2 1/2-3-2 1/2. What do guys think?

Actually the stock exhaust is pretty effective cat back. If you have a MTX you can gain 10hp with a performance y-pipe. I have a 2.5" cat back on a SHO with every bolt on mod and I only gain 5hp peak on a dynojet. I would just add some Magnaflow mufflers on the stock exhaust.

The stock pipes are pretty good. Getting rid of the third cat, resonator and the restriction at the muffler inlets/outlets is where the system can be improved.

I have a no third cat or resonator. In place of these I have a three inch pipe that then goes back to stock (2.25") where the exhaust bends around the gas tank then back to three inch and a single straight through 3" muffler.

This does need tuning, as any exhaust mod will, to get maximum performance from.

Well I already have Borla mufflers and no 3rd cat. I was thinking of atleast replacing the front cats with magnaflow cats and bumping the mid pipe to 3". The mid pipe size is a common upgrade on the Super Coupes. I just trying to find out what has been tried over here so I don't go in the wrong direction on my 99 SHO.

Don't know about the value of replacing the OEM cats with aftermarket. But whatever is done exhaust wise tuning is really needed to extract the full benefit from it.

The Magnaflows will alow alot more air to got through them. I currently have them on my 90 SuperCoupe and they offer almost no restriction.

Heard that!

Tuning

So... tomorrow the Bullets go on, and I'm gonna try and have the stock tip restriction removed as much as possible... and I'm also removing the 3rd cat at minimum... at that point, you feel I'd need some sort of tuning?? I was tossing around the idea of removing the resonater as well.

Fair enough. As far as 'tuning' goes and what's available for software to work with, I'm unfamiliar with it. What are ballpark gains or programming improvements that can be made with tuning the 3.4?

My exh. work got pushed 'till tomorrow morning.

Well it's safe to assume 10 hp. But the other tuning benefits are worth it as much as the HP. Plus the data logging and code reading from the Xcal2 are an added bonus.

I'm a n00b to this, so I'm learning. I didn't pay as much attention before reading the list, partially because I wasn't sure if/when I'd have one of these to drive, and partially because it was tough to keep up with the list the way I used to do it... and I didn't visit this forum at all. Plus my Cobra was my main area of interest and research at the time.

So, is the (or one of the) tuning programs the "SCT" tuning I see listed once in a while in various places? I'd LOVE to get the 'safely assumed' 10hp out of this thing... it needs all it can get.

The Xcal2 flashers from SCT are individually customizable. And they are user updatable with an updated tune sent through email.

That's a nice way to have it, with updates through email like that
I think I'll have to do some research on this now as well :)

at this early point, I dunno if i'd trust myself trying to mess with fuel maps and whatnot... I'd have to do much research to feel confident enough with it.

when you refer to tuning after an exhaust upgrade, what exactly are you referring to? That part gets me when i read it as i am fairly new BUT do know other stuff, exhaust nothing.
