The dealer has the original speakers for $20.00 each. I just replaced both the front speakers in my wife's 97.

The dimension is 6x8 or 5x7 (same) with a depth of 2 and 1/2 inches. I just replaced my door speakers with some very nice Kenwood 3 way speaker in my car. They sound great. I will post the exact speaker # if you want it. They are 6x8 and fit PERFECTLY. They are made specifically for ford, mazda vehicles and that is stated directly on the box. Go to a local car stereo dealer and I am sure they would work. There are also pioneer 5x7/6x8 speaker that fit specifically ford. Let me know if you want the part #

I forgot to add, DO NOT waiste your money on Ford speakers, you will get more bang/boom for you buck with aftermarket made to fit your car. Not hard to find, I can help with that. I know what you are going through because we had the topic about 2 weeks ago. DO NOT go with ford speakers.

Here are those Kenwood speaker #'s, Part# KFC-6808C; 6x8 3way speaker. The speakers are 200watt max. They will fit your door perfectly. They will sell for around 60.00 at circuit city or best buy. I got them from a warehouse for 35. Make sure you go and get a speaker wire adapter to connect from the factory wire to the adapter, which will connect to the speaker (got mine at circuit city). The part is made by metra dashworks (part# DW-5512sH)it was about 5.00, comes with two in each. Let me know if you need help with the door dismantal. I will be more than happy to help. Hope this helps!!

V8sho.com shows how it is done. I will be performing the 6x9 sub install next week with my new Nakamichi 6x9 subs (yes subs). I will have an extra and may think about selling it if I feel I don't need the replacement. I will post when instal is completed.

I got it on ebay. They are 6x9 speakers but are great for subwoofer applications. There are some on there right now. Check it out!!

I want to get aftermarket speakers for my front doors - they are 6 1/2", will they fit?

Also, how can the front speakers be both 6x 8 and 5x7?? :corn:

They aren't... they fit both 5x7 and 6x8 size holes though.

BTW, the Kenwood p/n 6879 is a great upgrade from stock for about $40/pr. I have heard some people have made certain 6.5" speakers fit, but many of them are too big or too deep to work.

If you go and upgrade the front speakers with aftermarket units, without upgrading anything else, are they going to deliver at least the same amount of bass as the factory units?

The reason I ask is because by no means does the stock genIII system "pound", but it does sound decent. When I upgraded from the stock speakers in my mustang (I already had an aftermarket head unit) I lost almost ALL of the bass. I too need to replace one of the fronts in my SHO, and I don't want to lose the bass I have.

The reason it sounds like you are losing bass is the muddy stock speakers are distorting and making it sound like there's bass where there really isn't. Aftermarket speakers also have bigger magnets and voice coils, and often require a bit more power to push them, so an aftermarket amp can't hurt.
