I keep receiving a CPS failure error - #14

I replaced the stock CPS about 1 year ago.

There was nothing left of the stock CPS sensor as it had been worn down to nothing.

Yeah, I had a clearance of 0.76 mm on that one, after, I guess, it continued to slide down closer and closer to the whatch-ma-callit with the vanes!

I purchased a new CPS, assuming I screwed up the installation of the CPS I installed.

But the CPS I installed looked perfect. Perfectly spaced, absolutely no indication of wear, no coolant anywhere.

Heck the Philips screws were shiny like new since I had really cleaned them up the last time.

You couldn't tell the difference between that CPS sensor and the one I just purchased.

There are no moving parts in the CPS sensor and it is a sealed epoxy unit.

So ....

What else could go wrong with a CPS sensor that would make it fail when there is no wear and it looks brand new?

Could something else in the circuit go wrong which would give a CPS failure code, when it is not the CPS?

What did your CPS sensor look like when you needed to replace it due to error code 14?

I just don't want to realize I'm doing this for nothing and now I have TWO good CPS sensor.

Your experience and thoughts are appreciated.

Thanks.

BTW:

Where is sdpatt? :shrug::shrug:
Haven't seen posts lately from him.
Is his SHO still running?

If you search through Steve's posts (projectSHO89), I believe he has posted the detailed test routines for both the crank sensor and DIS.

I've only seen crank sensor codes with a new CKP sensor a couple of times, and one was the result of a bad DIS, the other was a bad PCM.

If you have a known good DIS to swap in, that would be an easy way to determine if the DIS is the culprit.

Holy freakin' shitballs. 438K!?!?!?!?!

I'm sorry, I don't really have anything useful to add to this thread, but I just wanted to point out, as others have, that that is absolutely amazing. The fact that it has 438K and the CPS is your only problem... wow.

Have you checked the wiring from the CPS to the DIS to make sure it's ok? Are you getting continuity? At almost 450K nothing is beyond suspicion.

.

People like you and me have no shot at that kind of number. Cars in MI and MD either rust to death or are beat to **** by the roads.

Imagine. Just imagine...Being able to take a 5+ minute drive without even THINKING about potholes. I can't do it. Everyday is auto-x and every pothole is a cone. It CAN be fun...but you gotta watch for those other racers!

As for the CPS...
I've seen 2 of them fail directly (failed while I was driving). Intermittant stalling and missing. Not starting after stalling for 20-30 minutes...typical.
Those both looked like this...
CPScalcium

A new CPS, Timing Belt and Water Pump ensued.

What a wonderful 5+ minutes that would be...

:swing:

400k+ miles is amazing.

If it's not due to coolant, maybe road salt? Or other contaminants, that whole area looks pretty dirty, maybe try cleaning the vanes? That yellowish/orange residue at the top of the pic definitely looks like coolant.

Thanks to all.

Replaced CKP and same symptoms.

Then replaced CID and DIS.

Same symptoms as code 14 as projectsho89 states.

Ran codes again and all I get is #67.

AC clutch circuit failure?

Huh? Where did that come from?

I replaced clutch, switch, etc., about 1 year ago and AC is fine.

I guess last thing to check is the fuel pump.

I have to find out what contacts to jump on the test module; I forget.

Regarding miles, 93rev2sev is right.

Car has been driven and maintained less than 1 year in Boston, 17 years in Southern California and about two years in San Francisco area.

Most of my driving is highway and I keep up with maintenance.

But I still think this is a great engine.

Besides the sensors, it never gives me any trouble.

BTW:

What's the difference between your car and a woman?

You can leave a woman by the side of the road.

Well checking the wiring seems to be next if the fuel pump is OK.

RE: Hawkeye's quote.

Bouncing around on web, I stumbled into a Camaro forum. You should have seen the shit they wrote about SHO owners. NOT NICE!

I was going to post it, buy then I thought it would just start a war of words.

But if I find it again, I'll post it!

What, because apparently not having sex with your sister in the so-called back seat of an IROC-Z while holding a Schlitz in one hand and your own Joe Dirt mullet with the other while singing Kenny Chesney softly (and off-key) to yourself makes you a *****?

Um, not trying to be a *****. I'm just saying that 438k is a gob of miles and most cars don't last that long. I would generally give a foreign engine more chances to reach that number than an American engine. No, I'm not familiar with all the engineering and there are other engines with that many miles, especially from owners that take care of their cars. I'm not a fan of the Camero anyway. I hope I can get that many miles out of my SHOs.

No, I was referencing what the other dude said about what camaro owners were saying about SHO owners!
