What are bushings?

I see all this talk of bushings and poly urethane bushings, etc. What does it mean, what do they do? Greg Type-R needs to add this to the glossary of terms

where there are any two metal parts that move in the suspension there will be "bushings" all a bushing is, is a piece of rubber. poly is just a different material that isn't as "squishy"
