Which one is better?
which is more expensive?
Which is more reliable?
Any ideas?
Here we go again! Maybe this forum should permanently dedicate a thread site all its own just to this battle.

Anyhow...
Better - I have seen it written several times that properly pinned cams can last 4.0 million miles. Properly welded cams can last 1.5 million miles. Either one WAY more than your car will last.
More Expensive - Pinning. Much more labor involved due to cam removal.
Reliable - See Better ^
Ideas - Yeah, 2. Get your cams secured. And pass out flame suits before you ask loaded questions like this one. boink oh_my

the only downfall with pinning is the lobes can rock a little and make the hole for the pin oblong.......this doesn't help the situation. Welding the cams if using too much heat can distort the camshaft. so they each have their theoretical downfalls.

Excellent summary by both responce posters. I think that covers the ups and downs of both in a nutshell. So lets hold it there, please. The main thing is to view getting your cam sprockets secured to the cam as insurance against the potential for having serious engine problems at some later date, so as soon as you can do so one way or the other, it is probably a good idea.

Kirk, someone asked me where you got the small hood scoops you put in and I could not remember. Could you jog my memory, please? And did you get my email about a trip further north? :)

I need to tell him the type of car they came off of Kirk, that was what I could not remember. One of the T-Birds?

Not that email, the next one that asked what was the number of folk I would need to get together to make a cam weld trip up here worthwhile for you. Never received an email back on that one, so if you sent it, my ISP did not hand it over. I have noticed they seem to lose one or two every now and then.

Stephen -
I'd hazard a guess that Kirk (or anyone else) who did the legwork on a custom one-off fabbed hood like that would be hesitant to just divulge all of the info, especially considering at one point Kirk considered making these available as a saleable unit. Once info becomes publicly available, a) it's not special anymore when everyone duplicates it, and b) from a business standpoint, it's cutting your own throat.

Just a thought from Left Field.
