hey guys...well i just picked up a 1998 sho with 103k miles on it. There was a slight transmission fluid leak but my dad (hes a mechanic) fixed the leak and filled up the fluid. So i went out to try her out and realized that when it goes to shift under full throttle it does something strange...i hear it is supposed to shift at 6500 rpm...and right about about 6500 rpm is when it disengages the gear but then it revs up to 7000! and holds for a half second...redline!....and then drops back down and goes into 2nd. The same thing happens when going to 3rd. I dont know whats up with that...anyone know anything about that? thanks

Sounds like you'll be getting a P1744 code shortly.

Mine did that. The fix was a new pump shaft and bushing. Doug Lewis from FPS fixed it without dropping the tranny when I had it down there for a cam weld. I think he went in through the side pan.

It's most unfortunate Ford saddled the V8 with such a crappy tranny. But ~$3500 will get you a bullet proof tranny, beefed up TC and the Xcal2 tuning. Then the V8 SHO takes on a new demeanor. Just be sure to provide for ample cooling.

Coils can be had for around $70 from Murray's. Search v8sho.com for details.

The tranny parts can probably be had for a couple hundred. That's not something I'd feel comfortable replacing although a few guys have done it sucessfully.

I would get that looked after ASAP. If you catch it early you could save yourself a $$$ tranny rebuild. Ditto for the cam weld. It's a lot cheaper to take preventative measures than it is to replace the engine.

oh boy...
i talked to my dad and he said " just let off the gas...don't be so ******* it" but i suppose i should explain to him that this is a little more serious than that...

hopefully he can get this all fixed

what exactly is it about this transmission that goes bad? I know all tauruses have had tranny problems basically...but why? lol there are a lot of front wheel drive cars...and some with more horse than the sho...but they dont have such a bad time with trannys from what i hear.

If i wanted my tranny to be a little more reliable, are there upgrades or something i could do to my tranny?

You could go easier on the car but that will only buy you time. These trannies are a ticking time bomb (as are unwelded cams). What makes them so bad? Not sure. Some say it's the extra power. Some say it's the extra heat created by the extra rpm's. I think it's just bad design.

There are some things you can do to beef it up but you might as well wait till you need a rebuild before you do that as you need to remove the tranny and open it up to do so.

That is not the correct part. The pump shaft you would want is Sonnax 96855-02K. Probably about $30 wholesale. That's not the only part you'll need though. It really needs a tranny expert to do it properly in the car.

seems that now when it is under hard acceleration (3/4 throttle or more it seems) i have to actually let go of the gas or else it doesnt want to shift and it revs up really high

Boy I just got my cams welded and something else serious looks to be on the horizon. Fluid is clean and it shifts fine but I have experienced the 6500-7000 jump and thought it to was wierd.

Its a pump shaft thinger then? Going to have to read into that at v8sho.com now. You guys are awesome when it comes to these cars, theres hardly a thing that hasn't happened to at least some one.

Yea I think you would be hard pressed to find something that someone on this board has not ran into. Especially on the Gen III board help is usually no more than a few hours away. There are a few people like Mr. A that I think know everything about the Gen III's and are always willing to help...good luck with your SHO adventures.... :thumb:
