I am about to pick up a complete trans with a wavetrac differential for $600. The owners said that when he got the diff installed all the bearings were replaced and the proper preload was set. I am gonna get it this weekend and when I get it back home I want to make sure it is good before I put it on the SHO when I get the time. What should I look for when I check it out? What do I need to check? Should I take it to a local trans shop?
Thanks Mac

I wouldn't really bother unless you were told that it had some issues shifting. I mean, where are you going to get new parts? At best I guess you could swap the wavetrac over to a transmission that you knew to be good.

Thanks, also is identifying the wavetrac the same as identifying a quaife by looking where the axle goes?

I'm not sure what the Wavetrac looks like inside, but it won't have the three diff pins present on a stock open diff, which you can see through the holes where the axles go in.

I have a wavetrac in mine. If I remember correctly, you cannot see all the way through. There is a metal plate in between. Pretty sure you can see through the Quaife.

It definitely will look different than than the stock one that has the 3 pins visible.

And $600 is a pretty good deal. I think the Wavetracs were were in the $1000-1200 range new.

The diff has a metal plate and I walked away with the trans, aluminum bushings and 24mm/26mm swaybars for $650. Before I put it in I am gonna get reinforced motor mounts and put a pump and cooler on the trans to protect the diff and internals.

Heck of a deal. Depending on what you are looking for, you can make your own reinforced ones pretty cheap. I made mine pretty solid......put bolts through them and then filled them with Urethane. I picked the hardest kind, but you can user the softer if you are worried about NVH.

As far as the cooler on the trans, with an MTX I have never really heard of heat being an issue except under extreme conditions, like running a 24 hour of lemons, and I think that was with a stock diff. I have autoX'd mine a bit and have done numerous track weekends.......and I am NOT nice to mine on the track! Never had an issue, even in 90* air temps....track temps were hotter. I have heard that if it is really hot and overfilled it can spit fluid out the vent on top of the trans during hard cornering. People that have encountered this have simply added a section of flexible trans line to the vent to give it some more height. No problem after that. I guess all that is to say that I don't see the need for a cooler on the MTX......ATX definitely, but not the MTX. Just use a quality synthetic fluid that handles heat well and install a drain plug so you can easily change it each season or if shifting starts getting weird.
