Hey I'm looking for any TSB's on my SHO. When I went to purchased my SHO there was a small amount of water in the spare tire well. I checked under the car and found solid metal and no holes anywhere. The dealer went back cleaned the carpet and got me a new spare tire and wheel due to the other was rusted. Today I looked and there is more water in the spare tire well, (about 1/4 to 1/2")!!!! None of the carpet in the trunk is wet and I can't find any holes under the trunk. Has anyone had this problem before?

I am thinking about removing the carpet and getting a few cans of rubberized undercoating and just sealing the crap out of it. Any suggestions?

I would bet the water is getting through either the trunk seal and/or one or both taillight assem's and then setteling to the lowest point in the trunk. Later, Kevin.

Ya check the trunk seal and the area below the back window and along the top of the rear quarters for any holes.

I checked that. None of the carpet is wet in the trunk. Just in the lowest areas of the sparetire well. I am going to have to talk to the dealer I got it from. His words "if that trunk leaks at anytime I will reseal everything!". Thank you good sir. Should I still remove the carpet and still spray the rubberized under coating just to be safe.

I would wait on the undercoating and try to trace down the source. Also, did you get the dealer to write down the "I will reseal everything" comment? Being that I've worked in dealerships service departments for many years I know what salesmen (salespeople for the PC pukes) will do and say to get a sale and then act like they have no idea what your talking about. Good luck on that part!!!

well i took a two liter bottle of pop and filled it with water and poured on the back window to find the leak. The only thing I could find was the small leak from the taillights. I should be able to seal those up right? Any suggestions on what to use?

I haven't pulled it apart yet but, logic tells me that the amount of water in the spare tire well means that its not leaking anywhere in that area. No holes in the sheet metal.

I still can't see that much water getting into the sparewell from those two little leaks.

No leaks to be seen from the seal either

When I got my SHO, I was cleaning it all out and noticed that the spare tire was also VERY rusty (God I hope I don't get a flat). I later found that there was a leak in the metal part of the car (not the seal) right ABOVE the taillight. There was a small spot where the car rusted through there and water was getting in. All I did was duct tape it for now. There's another leak on the other side that I just found though. So check the part right above the taillights.

I havent checked my tail lights for leaks as I have very little body rust, however I can tell my trunk doesnt seal well (accident from the past?)....

Here is what you can do, have a trusted friend lock you in the trunk with a flashlight while she sprays the car with the hose.

You can seal the tailight assemblies with just plain old bathroom caulking. It will work fine, and probably stop the leak. Mine did the same thing when I first got it several years ago. Use the clear stuff, if you happen to use a little too much, it won't be noticable.

Or you can take them off and put 1/4-3/8" weatherstip on them. I had a Ford Probe that came with a ice rink in the trunk (froze in the 2 days from looking at and picking up) They were notorious for leaking.

Do you think that those little holes could leak that much water. Well over a combination of two weeks of melting snow and rain and washing the car, I guess it could be possible.
I will have to see what the hole behind the taillights are like. Then I can decide to eiter put caulk in it or do the weather seal.

A couple of small holes can lead to 1 larger leak... Water follows the path of least resistance, just like electricity.

Water in the trunk due to taillight leaks is a common problem, Have seen/heard of a lot of 'em the past 11 years or so. A friend of mine had a new '95 that leaked, he found water the day he looked at it! Just pull 'em off and seal up with what ever works best for ya.

Sounds like a blast. I think I'd prefer to remove the back seat and poke my head in the trunk instead. :thumb:

By the way, my trunk seal leaks as well. My solution for the time being was to drill two drain holes in the spare tire well and paint the exposed metal to prevent rust. It has worked well for me. Moisture in, moisture out.
