Hey guys:

I'm preparing to do my upper 60k, and I was wondering if anyone had some pics to show what a worn valve shim looks like. I understand that wear will look like dirt that can't be wiped off, but does anyone have some examples so I know what to look for?

You shouldn't see any wear(unless scratched)... The way to tell if there is wear is to measure it with a micrometer.

A worn shim will have a darkened, scratch or smudge-like area on it that cannot be wiped off. You can feel it with the edge of a fingernail.

That means the outer surface of the shim has either worn through or that metallic deposits from the cam lobe have been left on the shim. You'd better hope for the first.

And the result that you're really looking for is what the feeler gauge tells you after you put in the replacement shim.

As Scott would say; Quote: "it's the valve gap 'as left' that is important" Un-Quote.

Here is a pic of a lobe just starting to come into contact with the shim. It contacts the shim about 1/8 of an inch in from the edge.

It does use most of the shim's surface and the shim rotates around in the bucket during use.
