valve cover gasket

i have an 89 and was wondering if i am leaking oil from my valve cover , when i replace the gasket , can i just reuse it and put a nice thick layer of form a gasket on it because i really dont have an extra $70 to buy a new one of them . -thanks

IMHO, fix it right or just leave it until you can afford to. Unless you're losing more than a quart of oil in under ~500 miles, just keep the oil topped off at around $1.49/qt.

i personaly would replace it. i would never try to reuse a gasket unless it was for an EGR valve and that being if it was in good shape not torn or anything.

The parimeter gasket has not failed, the plug well rings have shrunk & hardened some what causing the leak. The parimeter gasket if removed carefully will reseal just fine if sealed in the corners of the cam radius. the plug well gaskets will reseal just fine if they are clean & dry before applying the sealer. don't over do the sealer. its unnessesary.
