The good news is I had no problem getting the tools (PN 303-344 Tappet Compressor and PN 303-345 Tappet Holder) directly from OTC by calling 800-533-6127 and charging it on my credit card. They arrived in under a week. The bad news is these two dinky little pieces of stamped steel cost $70, including the shipping charges and sales tax.

Has anybody tried using motorcycle tools, like these:

It looks to me like the Honda or Suzuki valve shim (compressor) tool may work, and the the Keeper tool in the Kawasaki valve tool kit might work. They are half the price.

FWIW, if you can get an extra set of hands, all you need is a screwdriver, pick, and a magnet. I've done a few valve lash jobs with just the above.

One person will compress the valve(pushing on the bucket w/flat head screwdriver). You will have pick and magnet ready to pull shim out. TO install, just have the other person compress the valve again, and you can just slide the shim in.

wow, i bought the OTC tools through a snap on rep. cost less than half of that :shrug:
