my boyfriend went to a little used car dealership to check out a 99 SHO for me.
he said that when he started it up, it had a little ticking to it.

could the ticking be the start to the cam problem?

Ticking could have been just about anything. How long did the car sit before it was started? How long has it been since it's last oil change? Was it well cared for by previous owner? We need more info.....a lot more info. My opinion....no....not many people are dumb enough to try to sell a car with failing cams. They'd come up with something to mask the problem until at least all the papers were signed. Without being there to actually hear it, my guess would be valves clacking or fuel injectors doing their jobs. Good luck.

According to Erik, when he looked under the hood, the oil was black. this car is in dire need of an oil change.
it's been sitting at this place since october, maybe longer.

i'm just curious about the sound.. if it's something little that could turn into the cam failure, then i don't want to even bother.
but if it's something little that could be fixed with an oil change, then i'd put this car into consideration.

Well, an oil change wouldn't hurt it based on your description, although changing the oil won't get rid of any ticking noise. If the ticking IS due to lack of lubrication, the damage has already been done. I'd take it for a test drive......listen to it at all speeds and throttle positions. Most cars will run a bit crappy for a while if they've been sitting and not properly prepared for the nap.

The injectors do make a slight tick of their own. Just ask to take it to a ford dealer for a check over. That would be the best solution.
