Just bought a 92 MTX, runs great, this is my first SHO and i'm in love. I do have one question though. When i first accelerate untill i get to 4000 rpms it runs like a Tauras GL. But when i hit 4000 rpms its like a night and day differance. Is this normal?

Open the hood and count the intake tubes - You have 12. 6 are always open and the other 6 open at 3900 rpms giving your engine 2x the air intake.

See the above picture on the left of a gen I or II intake and it should be pretty clear.

Good luck with your first SHO.

You may want to verify that the secondaries are working properly. If they are open all the time it will be very sluggish until 4000 RPM. When I first got my car the electrical connector that activated the secondaries was unhooked and it was very slow until 4000. Pop you hood and locate the secondary vacuum actuators. Have someone start the car and watch the actuators. You should see the rod move as the secondaries are closed. If they don't close something's wrong, check the vacuum lines that lead to the small black canister on the back of the intake. Also make sure the electrical connector is plugged in to the small device to the left of the canister.

If they are oen all the time you will not feel the boost at 3900 rpms that you are feeling (hence your original thread).

Actually, if they are open all the time you will feel a considerable boost in torque starting at about 3500 RPMs, but the car will be dead slow below that.

Well, checked it out. All secondaries are functioning properly. Got in touch with my friends- brother who just happends to have the same year as mine but bone stock, and with less miles. We headed out to the local "showoff" 1/2 mile road. I had him by 2 car lengths the whole way.. I think i will let her cool off now. burnout
Thanks for the info.

the 3.8 is tourquey and strong down low, but is a damn DOG up top. My g/f has the new 3.8 with dual runner intake (2002) and it really is a pig up to about 3 grand, it isnt worth a damn above 4k and is sleeping at 5k.

The general problem is that i thought it was a little under powered before i got to 4000 RPMs. I have only had it for a week. And it has 178k miles.
The Tauras GL is more powerfull than the SHO at lower rpms.
I was comparing it to an 88 GL 3.0 I used to have, and man was it a P.O.S.!!! :)

Chuck, depending on the miles and the previous owner, you might need to perform some maintenance. Search this site regarding 60k''s and such. As an example, my SHO seemed a bit slow on the low end...I replaced the plugs, resulting in better performance, then I replaced the plug wires and wondered what on earth took me so long to do that! I probably don't need to tell you that, but just want to make sure!

Is there a definite way to check the wires, besides swapping them, to see if they should be replaced? Obviously they are a bit expensive to just purchase a new set to find out. I realize that you can pull the plugs to check the ends of them.

I took the SHO to my buddy's shop and had it checked this morning. He had his best mechanic look at it, and test drive it. He said it was fine and is running normal.
Thanks for the advice guys!!!
