hey guys, i've got two quick questions for yas:

1. i was having a listen under the hood of my 94 MTX last nite, and noticed something: when i cracked the throttle to about 4k, i noticed a slight knock in the engine on the up swing... it seems to run great, and i stress that this is a slight knock (ie. you'd never notice it unless you had your head right over the engine when revving it... anybody have any idea if there's something i could look into on this one?

2. this is probably a dumb question, but i'm a new SHO owner, so here goes... how difficult is it to change the spark plugs? (are the back ones tough? do i need any special tools?)

thanx in advance,

ck

I am not sure about the knocking, maybe a valve lash? but the plugs are easy to change, Its the easiest to change them when the intake is removed, that bolts on with about 15 bolts, and some hoses, then just pull it off, and you have clear access to the plugs, front and back. then just use a 5/8 deep socket and unscrew the plugs! easy as that!

If you don't have the time or want to take off your intake, you can use an extension and a universal joint to get to the rear ones. I had to do this at the track the first time I ran platinum plugs with NOS and fouled them out. Then I found out you've got to run copper. As far as the knock goes, my '89 does the same thing as you describe. I also think (I am limited in SHO experience though) that is in need of a valve lash check. I plan on doing the 60k when I get back from deployment. Hope this helps.

Mc Henry, IL,
Try a 12 inch extension with a universal, Thats what I did and it took me a 1/2 hour.

I would be sure to have compressed air available and blow out the plug wells before removing the old plugs. Don't want any crud falling into the engine. The plug change isn't too bad on these engines. (Compared to changing plugs on a '69 428 Cobra Jet Mustang or a '67 427 Fairlane)Use extensions it should go fine.

One more thing, As for the knock, could it be the knock sensor hearing pre-ignition and retarding the timing?

Yup. Use a long extension and a U-joint to get at the back plugs. I found that disconnecting the hood struts and leaning the hood way back helps too, as they don't let it open enough for anything other than an oil check.

You don't need to take the Intake off.. I used a 3 inch and 6 inch with out the universal. You'll need to take of that vacum cylinder bracket thing to get to the middle plug.

I had to climb in there to get to it all, but it really didn't take long.

Remeber to blow out and "stuff" in the plug well before you remove the plug.. It's hard to see back there so be careful.

The hood strut removal thing is a great idea, I'll do that next time I change them.. to ******* the knees climbing up there.
