Since I've already made a post whore of myself, and while I still have the wife's camera, I thought I'd run this one up the flag pole.

Has anybody had this happen?

I've taken it to a few places and they've given me the run around. One of them is a family-run body shop that's well respected, so that wasn't encouraging. I remember reading about a TSB that had something to do with paint peeling back from edges, but I don't know if it applied to this sort of thing.

Looks like rust to me. As mentioned, bring it to metal and repaint. Check around the fender wells, door jams etc. as well.

It's rust in a way - the trunk lid is aluminum, and has started to oxidize underneath the paint causing it to bubble.

Is there a way to halt the progress of the bubbling from going any higher? It seems that when the trunk was manufactured, the seam just inside the bottom edge was not properly sealed, and water is getting in. I think this is what the TSB referred to. I had suspected it was getting in through the keyhole area and leaking down inside the metal, but I don't hear any water when I open or close the trunk door. I really can't put $$ into cosmetics when there are other bigger issues going on, but if there's a cheap way to stop it, I'd like to know.

I just wanted to get a few shots and ask about it since I was getting the ones of the blower controller.

Thanks for the info!

No, there is no way. The only solution is as noted by prior posters, take it to bare metal, prime, and repaint. You can do this yourself and maybe get it to look OK, or you can take it to a good body shop, though as you already know, that will likely be expensive.
