I currently have my 1993 ATX and the tranny slips from time to time and shifts hard once in a while also. before i spend the $1500 on a tranny rebuild i was wondering if it would help if i changed the fluid and filter? I did a search and didnt find exactly what i was looking for? thanks in advance!

Hard shifts and slipping... If it's kicking into neutral, take a good hard look at your torque converter. My truck had all the same symptoms, and sure enough, my torque converter failed and locked my tranny. Of course my ******** *** change the fluid, filter, and pan gasket, and tried to drive it. It ran fine in neutral and park, but when I hit any gear, it kicked and died... A good way to find out (although harsh), stop at a stop sign, on a back road, and romp on the gas. WOT. If it kicks out of gear or acts abnormal, FWIW I'd say take a good hard look at prices on torque converters.

BTW, replacing a toqrue converter in time can save your tranny. I didn't and the gears in my tranny actually melted into the side wall of the tranny and ate a chunk of the wall on the tranny.

Trust me, your TC is not the problem, your aluminum forward clutch piston has sheared or cracked. You need a tranny rebuild, plain and simple. Changing the fluid/filter at this point is just throwing money away. Start saving for a rebuild and shopping for a compentent tranny shop.

I got a quote from a local tranny shop and he quoted me at $1200-1500 with a 1 year warrenty. This doesnt sound too bad to me and i know he does good work too. Is there any type of shift kit that i should have installed while the internals of the tranny are opened up? thanks

The old reliable that I see most often on posts here seems to be the Trans go shift kit. If and when I need to rebuild thats what I'm going for...knock on wood! It usually seems to jack the price up to around 1800.00

By chance, have you checked your codes yet, Shawn? In what gears and at what times do you experience the slipping and harding shifting that you described?
