alright i bought a 97 SHO earlier today knowing that it was going to be a work in progress. the cams are being welded as we speak but it also has a couple trans issues.

the two issues that are known.
1. at cruising speeds the rpms will flare up as if something is slipping but it does not flare up and down quickly you only even know it is doing it by watching the tach. after the cams have been welded i think i am going to hook a scanner up and see what the computer sees going on. as far as i could tell it was only doing it in overdrive and more so at higher speeds.

2. the previous owner told me the trans spits fluid under high load from either an accumulator or servo cover. i never got it to do this though.

i am wondering what you think may be wrong and if i should just go ahead and have the entire trans rebuilt? i have been looking into it some and if it got rebuilt it would probably be done fully (shift kit/ torque converter/ bearings/etc.)

what is your guys' opinions?

edit: i forgot to mention the trans has been overheated several times due to siezed up wheel bearings and i am wondering if the heat could be part of the problem. the fluid has been changed a couple times since then though.

I cannot comment on the second item, but the first is a normal (and harmless, though irritating) interaction of the air conditioner with the transmission. You can defeat it either by placing the environment system in 'vent' or you can get a chip and have it programed to remove this hitch. A couple of people here can do this for you and hopefully will show up to give you further information.

it does it even when the ac is shut off. my sable does the annoying ac thing and this is way different. it fluctuates about 500 rpms and goes up and down very slowly a few seconds to travel 500 rpms. i took a video that i will try to upload later.

it was a pretty constant thing. traffic was kinda heavy so i didnt get to use the cruise that much to keep it steady. like i said though you coudnt even tell it was doing it except by watching the tach the car would not speed up or slow down or **** at all.

That really sounds like the TC locking and unlocking with directions from the climate control system. Try turning it to 'vent' and see if it goes away. There are only 2 settings where it does not happen, vent and one other I always forget.

When the TC locks up there is ~300 rpm change. It will happen anytime the climate control is in anything but floor and vent and at highway speeds. It will happen in 3rd too. But the rpm change is higher.

Paul always reminds me the other setting is 'floor' and I always forget again within a week. Fortunately, he has a good sense of humour for those of us impaired by old age and flimsy minds. Thanks Paul. :)

When helping people T/S this - I've found that having them press the "off" button on the climate control is a clear approach - No questions about modes or zones just regular old off...
