Heya, I was just wondering about the gearbox for my 89 SHO. I have had this car for about a year but soon after I bought it, the clutch went out and it has been broke down for pretty much the entire time I have owned it. I have been blowing all my money on my Z28 lately.

Anyway, I finally got it fixed the other day and have been driving it around and noticed that the driver's side cv-shaft seal is leaking. This is nothing surprising, since I had **** with the mechanic getting it done right, but the thing I am curious about is that the fluid is clear and smells like gear oil.

Now I am new to this SHO and this is my first Ford, so does the gear box have ATF in it or just regular gear oil? My Z28 is a manual and it uses ATF so I thought I would check and make sure before I add the wrong thing to the gear box in the SHO.

Anyway, you all know way more about the SHO than I do so I wanted to check around in case I am missing something about the gearbox/differential setup in this car. Any help is appreciated. Thanks

Type F atf is the recommended fluid. Redline D4 works pretty well and GM Synchromesh has been mentioned a lot lately but I haven't paid much attention. Sounded good though.

Thanks for the reply :) So what do you think that fluid could be from if it isn't coming from the cv-shaft? I am pretty positive that it is though. Hmm, I wonder if that mechanic might have put gear oil in my gear box. That would not be cool, although it still seems to shift really well.

I haven't driven it much, so I will drive it around some more and check to see if it still looks like it is coming from that seal. I had a bunch of engine oil leaking from valve covers too, but I just replaced the valve cover gaskets and the plug well seals myself yesterday. Could be remnants from that leak I suppose. I'll drive it some more and keep an eye on it. Thanks again :)

Tdent, you've got several SHO owners in the Fort Worth/Alrington area on the Lone Star SHO Club (LSSHOC) Topica mailing list and a few others in the Dallas area. Welcome.

Thanks for the welcome sdpatt, looks like I might be spending quite a bit of time on this board. The SHO engine is a fine piece of work, but the rest of my car has got some issues :)
