Tranny case question?

which side of the tranny case is the 5th gear towards? There is a car near me that had a bearing failure on the 5th gear or something, it's a black on black 92, leather, that looks pretty good. But when the bearing failed it galled the race or the case where it goes. I wanted to see which side of the case I "should need" if I were to buy the car.

there is a bearing on each side of the case, so untill you see it it is hard to determine which side went.

yeah I know there are bearings on both sides. What I'm looking for is which half of the case the 5th gear is closer to. The guy said the bearing that failed is on the side of the case that is the closest to the 5th gear itself. Actually he had pulled the tranny back out and looked at it, but he dosen't remember which half of the case it was.

I ask becasue there is 1/2 a case on ebay right now. And it might be worth me buyin it if it is the correct half to fix this car/tranny. I wouldn't mind buying teh car and then fixing it and selling it. He had the tranny completely rebuilt back when 1-2 and 3-4 synchros were avalible.

Are you sure it wasn't the bearing cup that got messed up? I have one of those, if that's the case.

The case half that the 5th gear is closer to is the one that the trans mount is mounted to. I also have that too.

He is correct, 5th gear itself is on the small half of the case (not the part with the bell housing). If you need just a case, i have one i can get you for very cheap. Make an offer and send your address and i can get you shipping info.
