I race with the Salina Region of the SCCA here is Kansas. This is my first year racing and I took 2nd place in the STS class. While I had to end the year in a Saturn SC2 I did earn most of my points, and all my better finishes, in my 89 SHO. As far as I know the entire suspension is factory stock with 130k miles and 17 years of wear. I would buy tires from a junk yard ever few races for $25 a pair so I did not wear down my good all-season tires.
First place was taken by a guy in an almost new Nissan Sentra. The best part about placing was knowing I did it with a $1500 Taurus SHO with junk yard tires. I am proof that you don't need much money to Autocross.
Really though, the trophy is just the icing on the cake. I had a blast driving my car and would be hooked even if did not win anything.
I said I finished the year in a Saturn. I put the SHO in the shop to get the front seats professionaly redone towards the end of the season. They are nice and non-ripped now. The Saturn was fun, but I kept looking for that 110 HP I lost. Here it is, right in the SHO where I left it! Oh, and I did rent a Cobalt from Enterprise and raced it when the SHO broke the front motor mount just before a race.
