I actually like the tire that the car came new with the best, the Goodyear Gatorbacks.
I found that they were very good if not excellent in the NY winter ice and snow with a full tread and I thought that they were the best I had used in the rain.
They are a bit on the pricey side at $125 each. The V rating is a nice comfort too when you're on it.

The OEM tires on the SHOs were not the Goodyear Gatorbacks, but instead the GT+4. The 16" size on the '91+ slicers was an asymetrical tread pattern version of the GT+4. These are good tires, but there are better choices for the different performance areas. There is no single tire that is good at all performance aspects: dry traction, wet traction, snow traction, lateral traction, transient response, ride smoothness, noise, etc. Only you as the driver can determine what best suits your needs. You should visit TireRack.com and read their information, reviews and comparison tests. The Goodyear GT+4 had some good characteristics or Ford wouldn't ahve selected them as the original equipment supplier. However, there are other factors in that selsection that have nothing to do with tire performance. It was also a business decision.
