Tires for wet/winter weather

I have Kuhmo Solus KR81 Tires, they absolutely SUCK! in the wet weather, they only have like 12k miles on them. With moderate but not aggressive take offs in the rain, my front tire spins. I have a welded diff, I don't nail it when that happens, I usually let off and then hit softer, and I can start going. Also in dry pavement I have been losing some traction on take offs.

I need to get some better traction tires that don't break the bank. Anyone have any suggestions. I know I should have done a search, but I had a few minutes and decided to quickly put this up.

I have had BFG Traction TA's on a minivan a long time ago, those were pretty good tires, but lasted about 40k of 60k.

Out of 6 sets of tires Ive run on my SHO, the Traction TA's do the absolute best in wet.

They're down right lethal in the rain. I'm pretty sure if I sidestep the clutch at idle in the wet I can get them to spin. Hard braking in the rain is a riot.

And then there's the noise.

I can go on and on and on...

the NT450 was a quiet, good riding tire for me, wore fast, bad grip on the dry compared to other tires in its price range

and HORRIBLE braking grip in the rain...........

I wouldn't buy it again, in fact they might be discontinued

but for 60 bucks a tire, what do you want? and for that low of price, they did exceptionally well for the noise/smooth ride departments, just bad that they suck so bad in other areas


I like the Fuzion ZRI's for a cheap tire and wet grip..... awesome dry grip too, and rode well

I have Cooper CS4's on mine and I love them. They are awesome in snow/ice and rain.. you loose just a little in extreme dry grip from a performance tire but if you're looking or something good in "non-ideal weather conditions" I would highly recommend them. I runn 225/55R16's on my Gen 2. The CS4's come in either H, or V rated. I went for the V and I think they're fantastic. They ride great... very quiet & smooth, and great traction. I had Traction T/A's before and I was unimpressed.

Being in northern IN, I suggest separate tires fro summer and winter.

If you aren't willing to do that, get Nokian WRs for year-round. Hands down, the BEST tire for that usage. They are Scandanavian a/s tires with an M&S rating. Not the cheapest, but the best for what you need.

Falken Ziex Ze 502s for the win. They shed water like a **** and have sweet tread depth for a V speed rated tire. I replaced the $250 a pop bridestone potenzas on my subaru with them.

My 95 MTX has Hankook winter-pike 215 60 R16 in the winter. They look a little radical with the big "V" shape tread pattern, but they work well. Going for a wide tire in the winter is a bad idea. We need them for Jan & Feb where I am. I use Fuzion HRI in the summer. They are 95H and also M+S (to my amazement). Neither tire was very expensive. I had Kuhmos on my 90 and I always thought that the tread was not deep enough and the space between the higher blocks was too small, but I had no incidents with them.

Good to hear that, Just picked some used ones up @ $45 a tire, 90ish % tread left.. just gotta get them mounted now.

Nokian Hakkipeliittas are amazing in the winter, if you do any driving on ice or snow on a regular basis these are the best you can get. Trust me, I'm Canadian.

They'll wear down pretty fast in non-winter conditions, but they still work pretty well.

I have only heard of KR21 and KH16 in the Solus line......
