Im in the process of changing the Timing belt in my 94 ATX. Was wondering what the service life of the Chains are and should the be done in general whenever the Belt is being changed.
As far as I know the belt and chains both have never been done. Nor has the water pump been changed.

I dont know the life of the chains, but they are definitely not changed whenever you do the timing belt.

I have seen motors with 130,000 on the chains and they run fine. Might want to check the helms manual on that one.

So.....if the timing chains are fine, how durable are the timing chain tensioners? I have heard that this can also cause a slight loss in oil pressure. Any input?

The timing chain tensioner blocks are spring loaded. How could that possibly affect the oil pressure?

Those chains SHOULD be good for the life of the engine. Never seen any need for replacement.

The timing chain tensioners have bleed holes in them. I'll have to look at one again to see when they are exposed.

FWIW, cam chains can stretch (just changed one at 119k, 93 ATX), and tensioners go too. Neither should affect oil pressure, as the only purpose of the cam chain is to drive the exhaust cam.

Sure some cahins might last but the only way to know is to check when you have your valve cover off. I seen the one Fred was working recently and my best guess would be it stretched by a link length or two.

I have also had cars with stretch chains. When compared to a new chain, there was about a link extra. My first experience with this was with a car with 98k...
