On 03/05/2008 my Gen II SHO was involved in a collision with another vehicle (other driver was at fault), and my car is likely totalled. The car has an estimated $8k+ invested in it in repairs and upgrades and I'm not sure yet how much money I'm going to get for my car even though it was in excellent condition and all.
It looks like a Gen III SHO can be had for around the same price as a Gen II SHO with similar mileage and in similar condition after doing some looking around on AutoTrader.com and Cars.com. So I've kinda been kicking around the idea of maybe getting a Gen III and selling the parts off my '92 to have some $$ to put into the Gen III if I don't go the route of getting another Gen II and swapping the parts over.
I probably wouldn't go all crazy with modding a Gen III if I got one, because let's face it-- the Gen II's don't have much out there for aftermarket stuff and Gen III's surely don't have more than the Gen II's. I think I'd maybe going for a high flow intake, ported intake manifold, high-flow Y-pipe, cat-back, and a transmission cooler. But just a few things to give the car a little more "umph" and get a nice sound out of the exhaust.
I've done a little looking around and can't really seem to locate which vendors offer a high flow intake for this car, nor a larger MAF meter or anything. Can any of you all point me out to a couple vendors for this stuff? Also, gas mileage is a little bit of a concern on making my decision on whether I buy a Gen III or not. What are your guys' estimated city and highway MPG?? I took my Gen II for a long highway drive a few years back (when it had a lot less mods on it) and got around 31 mpg on the highway doing 70-75 pretty much the whole way. I even downshifted to 3rd while doing around 75 and took the car up to over 100 mph once in that trip and still got that 31 mpg. I don't do much highway driving, but it's good to know that I'm not going to get crappy mileage with a Gen III. I have an automatic '05 GTO with a 3200 stall, blower, and all supporting mods and only get around 19 mpg on the highway doing 75 mph. Not too impressive, and I don't want a Gen III if it's not going to be any better.
Lastly, any idea on what parts I can keep from my Gen II that will work on a Gen III (ie: lower control arms, bushings, engine parts [like pulleys], etc.)??? Are the valve shims the same? I'm sure I'll have more questions to come but this is all that I can think of for now.
Thanks,
Andrew Grayson
