Hey folks,
Well I started digging into my junkyard SHO today, trying to find the source of this disgustingly loud engine knock. I wanted to run some things by you guys before I start ordering parts. I was thinking maybe a cylinder wasn't getting any spark, since this car has been very poorly maintained. Would this cause an engine knock? The knock is steady with the RPM's. It speeds up and slows down as I hit the gas. It's a very clean sounding knock, and I'm wondering if maybe it's the rod bearings? It's coming from the passenger side of the engine. Any help is appreciated. Wanted to find out the source before I go and start buying parts based on my knowledge. I think at a minimum it needs a 60K anyways, but I don't wanna blow too much money on it. Thanks again.... Oh, by the way, the DIS module is covered with duct tape. Could this be a cause of my problem?

"disgustingly loud engine knocks"

That usually means that one of the rod bearings is bad. Do a compression test on the motor. I bet that one cylinder has way less compression than the rest. I bought my SHO in very similar condition.

Another thing you could do would be to drain the oil. If there are any pieces of metal, like bearings, then it probably is a bad rod bearing.

The duck taped DIS module is not your problem. I don't think the car would start if it was bad.

you said passanger....I was going to suggest maybe a cam chain, but not from that side of the engine...

I'm going to do my rod bearings fairly soon....they say that it isn't an overly tough job....

just a couple of suggestions. if you are sure it is an engine knock then disreguard this message. you can buy a stethascope from your local parts house to find the clyinder that is making the noise or the acc. i had a bad knock sound from my 89. when it first started i swore it was a rod. so i limped it the 60 miles back to my house. well i didn't make it but i did find out what it was. p/s pump bearings were toast, the only reason i tell you this is because its cheaper than rebuilding the engine. boink so here are my sugestions, if you have a stethascope listen to each acc and also the tensioner pulleys. if not, try taking each belt off 1 at a time if it is an acc or tensioner it will go away(simple huh?). email me with your findings i'm curious about it.
