When my car is empty (only the driver) there is a thumping noise coming from the right rear when I hit larger size bumps. It is pretty loud. When there are rear seat passengers, there is no thumping. I think that the struts are shot, but maybe some bushings are worn. Do the major companies (like Monroe or Koni ) make struts for this car? What brand do you recommend? I know a lot of you have changed the springs and struts, but I like a smoother ride and I like the ride height that I have now, I don't want a lowered look. Is there any other reason to change the springs? By the way the car has 67K on it now, should I change all the struts?

A few different companies make replacement struts. The only ones that I would ever consider are the tokcios or the koni's. I have had both. The koni's are definetly nicer than the tokicos, but it is a bit more work to install them. Not hard work, just a bit more.
there is a lot of good info on www.shotimes.com about struts and springs.
I would replace the springs because its easy to do once the struts are out. Eibachs or Intrax are good choices.
I would replace all four struts. If you want a smooth ride, I would go with the koni's and set them on full soft. You will get maximum life out of them if you do this. Since you have an ATX, it will lower more with the eibachs (as opposed to the MTX), but the car will not be slammed to the ground. You may of course re-use your existing springs..The car will have a tighter more solid feel.

BTW, I am not far from you (somerset-New Brunswick area)

I had the clunk in the back but I just replaced my rear struts with Monroe Sensatracs because one of the struts completely snapped off. I also had my rear strut mounts replaced. I would have rather gone with Koni's or Tokico's but it was an emergency and I need my car everyday. I am pleased with the ride quality and there is no more clunk. Springs don't normally go bad but they will sag and if you have the money then replace them because there will be no additional labor charge. If you don't have the money you can leave the current ones on.
