More rear strut replacement woes: Turns out the Motorcraft and Tokico strut shaft nuts arn't compatable, so i need to get some new ones. The dealership is giving me the non-stop run around (everytime....i'm about to give him two nuts....<family forum censored>), so in an effort to get the SHO back on the road without the long shipping wait inherent to internet orders, I was just going to buy some generic bolts and throw them on. Anybody have any safety issues with this, considering they pretty much hold the strut to the car...?

Yeah, you're gonna want to go with the proper nuts. Use the wrong ones, and, well...

...firey death man. Firey death. :oogle:

IIRC, my KYB's came with new nuts, and they were the locking kind that don't back off unless you want them too.

thanks for the replies...in case anybody searches this for future reference, the correct ones for stock motorcraft struts is a 14mm x 2.0 hex locknut with ******..

Now for the next question...whats the best way to get the old ones off? It appears as though you need to hold the top of the strut shaft while you turn the nut, but on my strut mount there's absolutly NO ROOM to get anything except a deep well socket in to turn it (which cuts off access to the shaft)....Is there some sort of special tool for this? Everything is too fat to get down in (pliars, crows foot's) there except the needle nose, which don't do the job. I give up, whats the secret trick?

Those look absolutly perfect! I was sitting in the garage last night, staring at it, thinking "If only I had a box wrench that was wicked bent at the end". Hopefully the local home depot/sears will have a set, I'm tired of having this thing torn apart
