clutch pedal. It feels like there is resistance or feels like there are little rocks or pebbles in the pedal in the first inch or 2 of pedal travel. My clutch cable is not binding, nice and smooth. This resistance or this "rocks and pebbles" feel gets worse the more aggressive I am with driving, winding out the RPM's, conversely the easier I am on it, the less that feeling is felt. It is getting worse, though.

I tried to search this, but really wasn't sure how to find something like this.

Eric Vervalin showed me what happens on a MTX trans when the clutch pedal is pressed, there is a shaft that turns on the inside of the bell housing, his thought was maybe a bushing in that was bad.

Maybe even a TOB going out? I am still kinda noob at MTX's, so I really have no idea what this "feeling" is.

please discuss.....

most likely the tob binding up. if you new to manual transmission get a veteran to teach you clutchless shifts for when it finally goes. Also the most important is to save some money to get the clutch replaced.

It seems to have its moments. Like this morning on the way to work, no strange feelings in the way I described above. Just as smooth as could be. IDK, the SHO can have an attitude sometimes, I tell ya'. Just going to be babying this until I can get a new clutch, already have a ceramic TOB I was planning on switching in anyway.

I was looking around on flea-bay, and found some Luk clutches, for about $215+shipping. From what I have read on here, it is a good clutch. Has anyone ever used a VALEO BRUTE 5 Clutch?

I have money for it but, I am trying to save it for school next semester. I really wasn't prepared to buy a clutch and/or get a resurfaced fly-wheel. :frown:

I called about the valeo brute 5 and it is nothing different. I don't know why the call it that if it's a stock clutch. Just get the luk.
I also got a flywheel from autozone with the pins in it for 59.99. One of my pins was broken off, otherwise I would've had it resurfaced.
Most people don't know about microsoft cashback. I bought my clutch a while ago off ebay when cashback was at 30 percent. It's a deal for doing nothing, but sometimes you have to wait to get the cashback. Now it's actually bing, and it's probably only at 8 percent.

About the bushings, I bought the upgraded ones from shonut. Turned out mine were fine with 100k.
I'd buy them, if you find out they're bad when the trans is out then you have to wait.

-edit-
I just figured out why I couldn't post a pic of my pressure plate in my thread. Here's a pic, you probably have the same issue, but the tob can be bad also.

I was also wondering about finger wear on his.... it almost seems like its falling into the groove there when you push his pedal. It kind of "pops" into place in the first inch or so of pedal travel.

Can a TOB going out destroy a clutch? This clutch only has about 17k miles on it.

Is there a way to diagnose exactly what this is? Or is it a sure bet its the TOB?

As Eric said it "pops" into place in the first inch or so of pedal travel, I just thought that was where the clutch engages. Shifting this way I get through the gears faster.

I should have just combined my 2 MTX threads into 1. My other thread here.

I am probably just going to go with a LuK clutch, I have my SHO NUt TOB, and then I will get the AutoZone resurfaced flywheel for 59 bucks. And probably still have Bizzy , "Bizzy" a MTX trans for me to complete the tri-fecta.

K-Dawg, not sure how you knew that would be under 400 out the door, but good call, thanks. :thumb: ;)

Would a TOB going out, destroy a clutch? Say maybe one with low miles on it?

When I did my clutch the last time, the throw out bearing had lost it's seal but it still rotated OK. But even at that point my fingers on the diaphram pressure plate were brightly polished, worn down and 2 of the fingers had broken off short.
If the fingers on the pressure plate are not worn, it is good to reuse, and if the bite point is not at the end of the travel (in the carpets), then the disc is good as well. But at that point you have everything disassembled, and it is hard not to just put in the new parts and earn your guarantee. My clutch came from RockAuto and it was all Valeo products, and it is great.
If you can do the install yourself and the fingers look good, change your throw out bearing and leave everything else alone. My guess is the fingers will not be good. If you are paying for the labour - change everything as you can't afford to do this twice.

I have received some words from the one who has driven his SHO for 400k miles. This confirms the fact I am going to have to get a clutch. Probably my fault, too, as I didn't realize this, or that I needed to do it periodically.

sdpatt said:
I am sorry to inform you that the throwout bearing has worn the tips of the pressure plate spring fingers. If the clutch cable tension is not periodically adjusted to keep the TOB firmly against the springs, there will be sliding friction between the two parts that erodes the tips of the springs and results in the sensation you described.

I saw the results of this condition when I repalced my last clutch. With the TOB installed correctly and the cable tensioned regularly (whenever you think of lifting the clutch pedal with your foot), even the standard TOB can last 150,000 or more miles (and counting).

Sorry,
Scott

Look on RockAuto if you need one quick. The cheap one I posted a while ago seems to be a helluva deal for $120. The straps are thick, disc looks good. I dont think you can beat the price.

Is it that:

BECK/ARNLEY Part # 0616186 More Info
247mm Diameter;1 Per Car
Clutch Set, 247mm Diameter;9-3/4" Diameter;20 Splines;1 Per Car

That is a good deal. So it would be as good as say the LuK clutch?

I am going to order that clutch, and a resurfaced flywheel this morning (Friday 10-9-09).

I looked at the Beck/Arnley website, looks like a US company, so I would hope there would be some good quality coming out of them. They have been in business since 1914.

Are there any other parts I should plan on ordering? I have an OEM rear main to be coming from Storm-Chaser, I have a ceramic TOB to go in there as well. Where do I find shifting fork bushings?

I didn't find any by the part number you gave. I ordered the ones that SHONUT offers. Was about 30 bucks. :thumb:

The clutch was ordered this morning around 10am and according to Rock Auto, I already have a tracking number from FedEx as of about 3pm this afternoon.

I also ordered the new shift shaft bushings from SHONUT along with a resurfaced flywheel.
