Starter replacement

Hi,

I think I'm running the original starter on mine, as he was almost a summer car on his life the starter had a good life (canadian winters are rought on electricals). But one day, at 228 000 km, it will die... (my SLO one died before this mileage).

Someone know if a procedure exist to replace the starter ? I have the car jacked right now and I have a very low miles used one (a Napa of around 40 000km) in stock coming from a scrapped V6 Duratech.

It seems to be enought simple but I can't see the wires going to it (from below). I suppose I have to unbolt it and then I could unbolt the wires ? Upper starter bolt seems not easy to reach also...

It's simple enough. Though some of the plastic may be brittle from the years of heat.
While it's not necessary, I'd suggest removing the battery, battery tray, driver-side fan, and move the fuse box out of the way. This way you can get at it from the top.

If you are trying to get at it from below, you might gain some room by lowering the subframe bolts a little.

As I recall I found I had to go above and below to get at it, but it didn't take terribly long to do it. Mine was covered in oil so I spent some time cleaning there as well.

Mine is in the same situation as my camshaft seal was leaking. Looking from below, I'm impressed by how much oil this small seal can release on the engine...

(Good thing to remind to unplug the battery before. Most of the time I don't unplug it as it have no effect, but there, it's a no go.) I mistaken on my last post, the car is on ramps, not jacked (no loosening subframe possible here).

Many are on the way from the top, I'm not sure it goes by the top also. I'm wondering if I can do it without unbolting anything than the starter...(I'm applying a philosophy here : never awake a sleeping dog.)

Like unbolting the 2 bolts (starting with the upper one), slide it and then unwiring it. My only question there is enough lengh on wire to exit the starter from his place and unplug it. From what I saw, I need 3 inches of play.

If you can get all the bolts disconnected, you may be able to remove it through the top without removing anything. I don't believe you'd be able to remove it through the bottom without loosening some additional bolts and lowering or lifting anything.

Yes, this is one of those cases removing power is a must for safety sake!
