I have finally gotten around to trying to remove my Speed-O cable and **** it. If you have a long memory, last year, at this time, I posted a question about my speed-o making noises and getting erratic after about 50 mph. The faster I went, the more wild it would swing and get noisy. It sounds like a dry cable or some friction behind the gauge to me.

Well, I am trying to remove the cable from it's connection in the engine bay, where it connects to the longer cable that goes to the passenger side. I can see the "pin" or loop I need to pull, but it won't pull free. Is there some trick to this ?! As thin as the thing is, I don't see how I could push it back in , after the fact, if there is this much pressure on it. Here is a picture:

That little circle is the pin. Pull that then it comes free.
I just did this like a week ago.

On the other side of the pin you should be able to see the tip of it push those back with some pliers or something.

I've pulled like HECK on the loop. It hasn't moved. Is there are " Before you pull the loop... " step I need to make ? Something I need to squeeze ? When I shove it back in, it can't be this hard.

Yeah, I tried pushing down.

I think I should be a little more accurate with what I meant. The loop DOES move, but not far enough to pull through the far side. I've put some needle nose Vise Grips on it and pulled pretty hard. I'm concerned that the plastic will break before the little metal "pin", loop. or what ever it's really called pulls out.

If I push down, how ,much should the cable move ? It must be easier than this, or it would slow down the whole assembly line putting this thing together !

I just yanked on the cable and the whole thing came out of the tranny. I just put it back in when I was done lubing it. I used white lithium grease and it didn't work great...it helped but didn't solve it. After I did this someone told me not to use that stuff because it can harden up. I need to go to NAPA and get some speedometer cable **** and try that.

Pull the pin harder while pulling and pushing the cable in and out. It might bend, but you can use needle nose to straighten it out.

OK.. I got it off. GEEZ, it was a bugger.

When I put it back together, should I use some sort of **** on the square shaft or just clean it up ?

Another question:

To **** the speed-o cable, at the cluster, do I use a "liquid graphite" or what I have found, in a little tube called " Graphite ****" which is more of a powder and often shows it being used with locks ?
