I've noticed the stock JBL speakers just plain SUCK!!
My car's previous owner took the time to install a nice JVC Stereo/CD receiver (HD radio ready too) but the tunes now play thru the paltry stock speakers.

What is everyone using for simple speaker upgrades???

im using my stock jbl's and just amped them with about 50-60 watts rms with a jl xd600/6 amp and tuned well with a alpine 9887 headunit. so what I'm trying to say here is before you throw out the jbl's (unless they are just plain blown) try crossing them right and amping them with an aftermarket amp. mine sound really good and there are a few people on here who have heard them there selves and are impressed with the sound.

I would get a set of aftermarket speakers and swap them in. Something reasonably priced like Infinity, Kenwood, Kicker etc. If you get a few models and shop them around the web and ebay you can usually get a decent price. You should be able to get new fronts and rears for ~$100-150.

If you feel fancy then you can always add an amp later.

the stock JBL aren't horrible, per se, but they are old tech. they may sound good on an amp, but lets put my boston components on that same amp and see what a difference it makes.

Mine's a 93, so I'd like to think speaker technology has advanced in 17 years........ (?)

Yes, and so has amps. If you put new speakers on your old jbl amp and its clipping them or not sending a clean signal then those new speakers, it will sound as bad as your old speakers.

Clean amplification is an essential part of a well sounding audio system.

Years ago, I installed new Kenwood speakers in my T-Bird that had a Kenwood stereo receiver installed previously. No amp in the configuration- other than what is built into the receiver.
Nonetheless, just replacing the stock speakers, with some Kenwood speakers was like a night & day difference-- and no amp involved. And since I'm not one that needs to BOOM my dental fillings loose with bass........I was happy.

Who said anything about bass?

So go buy cheap kenwood speakers then...

Im using the stock JBL's amped and they out play 150$ speakers. I guess they have some kind of power capacitor's on the speakers that allow them to play a little better. i would not change them for the best.

If my speakers play a bit raspy they'd probably be blown or dying? It sounds like its just the front ones too..
No amp to them just aftermarket head unit

So as far as I know now at this config the jbls do blow.

Here is a good advice, that I got from one of memebers on this forum: bypass factory amplifier if you're using aftermarket radio and you'll see if your speakers are good or not.
When I did that, Even my subwoofer started playing with the beat.

The easiest way to bypass it is to buy bypass kit at any electronic store that sells car audio kits, or order online. it's about 15 bucks.
Believe me, i was about to replace my relatively new infinity speakers, thinking it was a total rubbish.

That capacitor is a filter.

well even better. thats why they sound to good. i found out that the systems in the ford's at the times of the sho's where doing so much better than the over sea car makers. such as BMW Audi who accually lost to the taurus sho. the speakers in our SHO's have nylon and plastic cones. really advanced tech for back in the day.
