Have a 94 3.0 with fresh 60,000 mile overhaul. Car has 127,000 miles. Black soot, not oily, forms on tail pipes. Milage is good, stutters a bit on take-off but otherwise runs great. Injectors were cleaned with the direct entry fluid. Any ideas?

Black = running ruch.
Stutter - could be the same.

Check your plugs/wires, TPS, and O2 sensors.

not necessarily. i have a stutter and running lean. the stutter is more than likey the wrong heat range of spark plugs.

the black soot (carbon) is a natural byproduct of internal combustion engines.

If it was black smoke it would mean its running rich. My car does not run rich but it gets plenty of carbon built up on the inside of my exhaust tip. Can be a pain to clean but its not bad.

My car does however run rich in WOT situations which is fine with me. Just a bit of black smoke buts its not bad.

He did not mention how much soot in the pipes...

My SHO is running richer with the new motor than the old one and it shows in the mileage. Plus, you can smell it.

I'd still check the list I gave . Easy enough, and no cost unless something needs replacing.

Could be oil in the plug wells, for all rltrbill knows - even on the rebuild. Plus (I just paid attention to the posting), he's noticing this on take-off. That's more a sign of running lean or weak spark rather than running rich. Double-check the TPS voltage. I had to leave one screw out of mine because I couldn't get it set properly.

if a fresh 60K was performed, then the valve cover gaskets should have been replaced, along with plugs and wires. if the 60K was done according to the sources on here, oil in the plug wells would not be the culprit. the TPS would more than likely throw a code and the MIL would illuminate.

on a cold take off, i experience stuttering because i am running a hot plug and its not warm enough to fire properly. before and after i overhauled the heads, i still have black smoke at WOT, which indicates running rich. my dyno sheet from last month indicates lean (15:1) through all RPM range.

soot in/on/around the tail pipes is still a natural byproduct of internal combustion. my moms 04 F150 has it, my dads 03 F250 has it, my 91 SHO has it, my 79 Malibu has it, and my dads 56 Dodge has it.

If you run at WOT then you will get soot on the pipes. Every SHO should have soot on the pipes. :thumb:
