i have a 91 MTX, got it from a guy for under 300, the guy said the car hadn't been started in more than 3 months and didn't start, got the car, replaced the fuel pump, CPS and Cam sensor, now the car starts. but after a minute, i see white smoke coming out the engine, nothing leaks however, could it be old oil, needing an oil change, don't know, any thoughts? also, the abs light comes on when i brake? i need help, the car only has 95K, could be a great project. thanks for the help

If you are seeing white smoke as the engine warms up, you are most likely experiencing the results of a bad Head Gasket. White smoke = Coolant.

Is the smoke coming out of the engine bay or out the tail pipes? If it's coming out the pipes it could be condensation built up inside the exhaust that's burning off. What does the exhaust smell like? If it smells sick sweet it's coolant burning.

The ABS light is indicating that there is something amiss with the ABS system obviously. :) You can take the tire off and clean out the sensor by running a piece of sandpaper through it, that will eliminate any debris that might have gotten in there which would keep the ABS sensor from reading properly. Short of that, you might consider replacing the sensors, but inspect the brake system first to make sure nothing else is wrong. Check the fluid, brake pads, brake lines, etc. I'm not sure how to get the ABS codes, never done that one before. If you're not confident with your mechanical abilities it might be best to take the car to someone who is.

What exactly does the sensor look like? Is it the same on each of the four wheels? Pics? Thanx.

If you take the tire off and look at the hub (right behind the rotor) you'll see like a gearing. Follow it around to the front of the car.

There is a rubber-hose looking thing coming out of the "knuckle" that is actually a wire inside. This goes to the sensor. The sensor goes all the way throught the knuckle, towards the gearing. So between the gearing and where this wired sensor is needs to be clean and free from gunk.

The ABS sensor is really just a small cylinder (like the shape those little plastic things roll of film comes in) only smaller, with wires, and then the top that screws into the knuckle.

-----------------------

This sensor, like the CID (Camshaft ID sensor) and Crank Position Sensor (Called CPS or CKP) are just like electro-magnets. As the pieces of metal go by it sends a signal (on/off/on/off etc...) to the engine computer or ABS computer.

--------------------------

Sorry if I'm confusing, but hopefully this helps.

The ABS codes can be read in a manner similar to the EEC codes. I had a link in my bookmarks, and I just found it.

If the light comes on only after moving or braking, it does sound like a wheel sensor or a broken ring causing bad readings at the sensor, but the ABS codes might clue you in to which one it was.

Enjoy :) :thumb:
