just found this interesting... the volvo XC90 is now available with a V8, based off the 3.4 liter SHO motor. it now displaces 4.4 liters and puts out 311 horses at 6 grand..this was just what i read in my latest car and driver.

now when my mothers motor blows...i want one of these..

Unfortunately it is auto only and setup for AWD. I don't know if it could be set up for FWD, as the AX4N would not mate up to it. I don't think a stock AX4N could handle that kind of power anyways.

If Ford really sees nothing wrong with the cam issue I guess they haven't done anything about it on the new generation motor....yeah, right!
They wouldn't call it an admission of guilt or anything, just "continuing product developement".

Paul posted some pics over on the V8SHO list that SHOwed a cylinder block head surface that resembled a Honda. The cylinder are standing siamesed but otherwise unsuported at the deck. I always thought that would be good for cooling the combustion surface of the head.

In the article about this engine in C&D, they explicity said it is a reworked version of the SHO V8.

Does anyone know if the crank, rods and pistons will fit in our block? Are crank journals the same? Did they get the extra 1 liter from a longer stroke and a bigger bore?

IIRC the article said it was both bored :)snicker: ) and stroked. I am not sure on the specifics. To bump it up one whole liter I would imagine either/or is pretty significant.

Interesting!!! More thoughts...

It all comes around again. The XC90 is built on the same platform as the new Ford Five Hundred and there has been rumored to be a V8 AWD version of that in the works for some time. The Five Hundred basically replaced the Taurus so is this going to be the closest thing to a "post Gen 3" SHO as we're going to get?

Just a thought. :D

Not much info on this motor yet but I did find a pic of the motor here and I read somewhere that it is going to have a 2 stage (read IMRC) intake that switches over at 3200 RPM.

I also read the Car & Driver article and they did say that XC90 engine was based on the SHO 3.4L V8. But today I got the October edition of Ward's AutoWorld which has an article on the new engine. The article says:

"Volvo insists its new 4.4L DOHC V-8 is not a modified version of the 3.4L SHO V-8. At a press conference in Sweden, reporters closely questioned Hans Wikman, vice president-large cars for Volvo, about the relationship between the new Volvo and SHO engines.
Wilkman says there is little in common between the bigger Volvo engine and the one used in the SHO. About the only significant components common to both engines as the piston connecting rods, he says"

It sounds like not too much is interchangeable, but I would guess that the 3.4L design was used as a starting point.

Well lets put it this way. Ford owns Volvo. But yet I say Volvo wants to kind of be known as them selves. They want the engine(4.4) to be all theirs. And I'm sure they know about some of the bad press on the SHO engine. There for they want to say its not like it at all. But the cat is out of the bag, and we know different. We all know the V8 SHO engine is a great engine. And I think it still is. And thats from back in "96". Its just that Ford or Yamaha made one little mistake on it, and we all know what that is.

I want a stroker V8 SHO! :****:

From the link provided by SHOBrad, the article says the Volvo V8 is 754mm long and 635mm wide...no mention of height.

Anyone know the dimensions of the SHO V8?

it does seem amazing to me that they could have gotten 4.4 liters out of a 3.4 liter motor, which is why i'm just thinking that the volvo motor is just a scaled up version of the sho motor. It would be neat if any parts were interchangable as well.
