Does anyone have any info on what is involved in a rod shifter rebuild, and what parts are needed?

My shifter has a sloppy feel to it that I would like to get fixed.

Thanks

Dan,

There are a couple of things you can do to reduce the sloppiness in your shifter. I suggest you start by trying to narrow down where the slop is coming from. Have a look underneath the car at the shifter bar that spans from inside the "black box" directly underneath the shifter to the rear of the transmission. Grab that bar and try to twist it axially and pull it side to side noting which end of the bar exhibits the most play (at the tranny or in the black box).

If the majority of slop is coming from the black box end, you can replace the "ball and socket" bushings at the base of the shifter itself inside the black box. One source for these replacements is here (look under the "Performance" section). I've done this on my '94 with very good results.

If there is a large degree of slop at the tranny end connection, have a look at this post for some good information on how to alleviate that problem.

You may decide to try both of these fixes, but either of them should help to firm things up quite a bit.

Hope this helps!

I recently found a ton of slop in my shifter. Turns out it was at the tranny end of the shifter. The nut that goes to the clevis and bolt was really loose. It's amazing how much slop that little nut can cause. It's an easy check then condeming the bushings at the shifter end. I've also replaced the bushings at the shifter end. I don't know how everyone else changed them but I found on mine that a pop rivet was holding in one of them and I had to drill it out in order to replace that one. A new pop rivet went it to resecure the new one. Good luck finding your problem.
