self alignment question

Okay - I'm set to do my own alignment this weekend (thanks to all who contributed to the sticky). One question, do I adjust the toe by turning the outer tie-rod end? That would mean I would have to pop it off each time I adjust it - correct?

There is a jam nut threaded onto the inner tie rod, it is tightened up against the outer TR to hold it's position. When you loosen this nut, you will be able to turn the shaft of the inner rod, screwing it in/out of the outer rod, making it longer or shorter. (the inner rod is a ball & socket joint, the shaft will spin freely).

So....you are screwing or unscrewing the outer TR...but you are actually turning the inner TR, while the outer TR remains stationary.

No need to disconnect anything. Loosen the jam nut and turn the tie rod to get the toe you want. Check periodically to make sure the steering wheel is still pointed straight.

I put two 12"x12" pieces of white board with grease between them under each front tire when doing this. It keeps the tire from putting tension back into the tie rods while you're trying to adjust toe.
