recently I was washing my car and made the horrible discovery of rust on the drivers side skirt. It is in three very small patches. It appears that they're are four black fasteners that can remove the skirt on the drivers side door. However I am not sure how to get the metal strip of after. I don't want to break it when I take it off so any suggestions would be great. I believe that there was a article on this at shoclub or sho times but can not seem to find it. by the way it is a 1990.

Common SHO problem.

This is how I fixed mine;

I removed them altogether. You need to remove the door panels to remove some of the bolts.

there are some bolts on the outside door lip as well.

I used some 3M double sided tape to affix the piece back to the door in addition to the lower bolts.

I bought some generic side molding that fit in the groove to replace the old steel insert.

Give me a call sometime and we can hook-up and I can show you how to do it.

If you encounter any lifting of the corners, some short screws in the old mounting holes will work. Merely screw them into the back-side of the new molding.

I didn't have to take the interior panels off to get the door cladding off, I just pulled on the cladding after taking all the nuts off. To fix the rot, get some cladding from a southern car. That shouldn't be too hard at the rate they are being parted out. Also, the gen 1 LX had a stainless steel strip, you could get those and paint or possibly powder coat.

I was hoping I could use a grinder and grind the strip. Since the rust is in three very isolated small clusters I was hoping the rust wouldn't be deeply infected in the metal so I could reuse the strip. would this not work?

You can certainly try to fix it but I bet the rust on the back side and the edges is far worse. Eventually what will happen is the bottom of the strip will start to rust where you can't see it let alone hit it with a grinder.

Mine had gotten so bad that It started to deform the door trim around it. The rust also stained the paint. This is what prompted me to fix it in the first place.

I like the idea of using the Stainless strip form an LX ...I may need to look into that

You need to measure the black trims width and then go to either Carlsons autobody supply or even try Canadian tire or Parts Pro and look for generic black side molding that is the same width.

I believe I bought mine at Carlson on the North end several years ago.

If you happen to be on Whyte Avenue, I work at the Hub Cigar store every day from 2PM to 8pm except weds and thurs.

My SHO is usually parked right out front on SUndays (free parking)
