Hey all,

I took my '13 non-PP in for some recalls the other day. While the dealer had it, I had them look into a small, slow leak that I noticed when I was doing a routine oil and filter change. Turns out that my right half-shaft seal is leaking. The dealership quoted $400 to change the seal with the seal only costing $25 or so.

Is the seal something that can be changed with hand tools in my own garage? I'm very mechanically inclined and do most of my own maintenance. Just not familiar with doing this particular repair.

Thanks.

Did you get the axle-shaft recall done? If not, it needs to be done, and they will change that seal with it I hope. If not, and it was already done, then whoever did it either didn't change the deal or damaged it after replacing it.

I would imagine doing it yourself would be a no-brainer. Problem is, you need to swing the knuckle and outboard axle out far enough to get the inner stub out of the "extension" to replace the seal.

One of the three recalls was the half-shaft retention clip campaign but they said it checked out OK so they didn't replace it.

Basically, I'm imagining removing most of the front right suspension/drive to get to the seal?

I bought a 2010 SHO that had the same leaking seal. The dealer replaced it with the newer revision and 30000 miles later started leaking again but thankfully I bought the Ford ESP warranty because the PTU is now being replaced because there is metal shavings in the oil. Hopefully yours is only the seal.

Probably the hardest thing for the DIY is getting the plastic dust cover off to service the seal behind it the heating up the new plastic dust cover and installing it into the P.T.U.

The intermediate shaft seal is pressed into the put and does not bottom out on anything if I recall correctly. It's been 3 years since I've had to replace one though.
