okay, so it's determined the 98's finally coughing up it's trans after 210,*** miles. i'm torn on whether or not to buy a reman unit from somewhere (no clue where) or just have mine yanked and rooted through and rebuilt. I dont particularly trust getting a junkyard unit due to the fact that it could very easily have the exact same problems.

in a nutshell, hard accelerating from a dead stop causes the thing to jump out of gear until the revs drop at which point it clunks back into gear and motors off like nothing's wrong. fluid level's fine, and it's not burnt or nothin.

so....rebuild or take out a personal loan to replace? i"m fairly certain it'll be cheaper to rebuild it, but i don't know if that's the best course of action.

suggestions?

Try to have your unit rebuilt at that shop in the NE (I think) that is famous for this task. I don't remember the name, but there are lots of people who claim it is a great place to have transmission work done. Supposedly, it is near indestructable when finished.
Might be wise to drive it there, but there may be a better way, depending on your circumstances.

How much longer do you intend to drive this car? I don't know about the quality and availability of parts needed for a rebuild. Local rebuilds around here are hit and miss.
If I was going to put another unit in a GenIII I think I'd go with a Ford reman unit with a decent warranty or a little extra and have some SHO guru mod it a little to increase fluid flow and cooling. Depends on how much you're willing to dump into a car with 200+k miles.
My GenIII with 213k has several problems including a tranny that is starting to slip. The dollars didn't make sense as I don't have time to wrench much myself. went and got another car.

money-wise, I personally feel it'd make more financial sense to replace the trans in a car I've had for almost 7 years and am intimately familiar with rather than buying a different car in that price range and potentially wind up shelling more out of pocket. Them's just my thoughts...

I used AAA Reccomended Tranny Shop that did another trany for me. They opened the tranny and gave me an estimate and parts list. Best of all they let me buy the parts (saved me hundreds) and they did the labor. Highly reccommend getting the Tran-Go kit to address issues and improve shift feel.

I think if money is a priority, then maybe a used, known to be working correctly tranny might be the most cost effective way to go. Then when/if that one goes south evaluate where you are with the car again. This is especially true if you can swap one in yourself.

There was a 'new' remanufactured transmission on eBay for ~$500 about a week ago. If I remember correctly the person who did the rebuild is a Ford technician. You should find the auction by searching completed listings.....

Great price...but I am wondering what was replaced? I spent more than that on parts for my rebuild.

glad i know a trans shop

my rebuild was 400 and they gave me life time, because the first trans wasn't right and to promises his work is right this time. paid 200 in parts ( included a whole new gut stack) and converter. and 200 to the guy that did it. and because it wasn't right the first time they sent my vb to a ford ax4n vb specialist and that guy did all kinds of updates to my vb and now the trans has never felt better.. :woo-hoo::woo-hoo::woo-hoo:

It jumps out of gear than back in on its own? If you have a auto than check the trans mount or motor mount I bet something is broken.
