It is possible, but I don't recommend doing it. I suggest removing the entire assembly. If you have ez access to the mounting nuts, I.E. remove the seat belt retractor, it's a 30 minute job. Get yourself a spring compressor, you will need it.

Did you ever concider using a ratches strap(tie down)to hold the spring compressed?I know,ghetto style,but i am very cheap :p

Ok cheapskates. It's $40 to loan the compressors from autozone, and they refudn the 40 when you bring em back. Is it that hard, or do you want to lose an appendage due to flying springs?
