On the Gen 1 is that line of metal that runs up beside the rear window a part of the quarter panel?

No, it's a separate part held on with clips. I have tried to remove it before without damaging it but it's very tough. The part itself is made of aluminium so it will bend and tear very easily if you are not careful.

I noticed that there are circular clips that are riveted to the body. Part of mine is missing, so I was wondering if it could be removed (I don't care if I damage it) but more importantly replaced. Obviously I would have to remove one from another car without damaging it though.

I think there is a special tool to get the clips off. The clips look something like this:

I was not able to get one of the trim pieces off without breaking it.

Would a body shop be able to do it? I'd like to get it fixed at some point, but I'm having a hard enough time aligning my fenders correctly, let alone outdoing a more experienced user.

That picture above, I haven't seen anything like that on mine. I'll take a picture later. What I have attached to the body is a round, dish shaped deal (ever so slightly convex) with a rivet through the center.

That broken piece is what I'm talking about.

Well those are what I saw on the '89 parts car I tried to remove that trim piece from. My memory of that car is a bit foggy though (I only messed with it for a total of 3 hours). A decent body shop should be able to remove them. It may be a good idea to take yours there first so they can get a better idea of what is holding them on before anyone attempts to remove a good one. BTW, that trim piece is the same on all Taurii from 86-91.
