Ive been reading up on this issue, thought I would get your opinions if you think Ill be ok with trying a new seal. I believe this was a Felpro I tried using, but I had scratches also. Not only on the wall, but from getting a screw in to deep and bottoming out. What can I say, it was a frustrating day working on the car. But to make myself feel better, I will go with the "I think it was already like that and it was why it was leaking in the first place" story. Im not totally sure of the sleeve process or if I need to go that route, but I take it I would need to pull the back valve cover and that cam housing back there? Or would that just be a slide in type deal from where I am at now? Basically, if this was you, would you think scotchbright'ing those scuffs down and trying a new seal would hold? Thanks much.

Not sure on the scratches as it is hard to see.

I would go with a Ford unit as they are a bit easier to install. I was able to slide mine in. It helps to have a peice of pipe to seat it properly.

I wouldn't worry about that part where the drill went too deep. You just need everything to be smooth where the seal actually seals, the outter diameter and inner diameter of the seal. FelPro's cam seals have been known to leak when new, I would recommend another brand.

Felpro cam seals are a crap shoot. The Ford seals are a reliable choice, though more expensive. The marks on the housing are not going to hurt anything. But do you have scratches on the camshaft? The pictures are way to fuzzy to tell. Try some shots with a good camera using macro setting if you want our assessment of that.

Most important, did you use a thin bead of RTV sealant around the outside perimeter of the seal, so there is RTV between the seal and the housing? That is essential, the FSM calls for it and the chances of a leak without it are high.
