really getting annoyed (smoking, code 332)

Well, I just dropped about 800 bucks into my car to get it running better and driving a little better (rod bearings, 02's, gaskets, exhaust from the y-pipe back, blah blah blah) Biggest reason I did it all was because after driving it, it would smoke pretty bad, so I quick driving it to replace seals just for that reason...

I get it all back together, and noticed today that I am still having a smoking problem.....WHY?????

I have noticed it doesn't do it if the car is just sitting and idling, its only when you drive it....I did notice the CV boot is torn, I am thinking that is it...but I also had a problem with the Power steering pump leaking all the fluid out (not sure whats wrong there, since I have refilled it, it hasn't leaked again.)

Now the EGR code...I kinda have a good idea what to do...basicly replace the EGR valve itself....blow the lines out replace the DPEF valve (is that the silver box on the back of the intake? cause if it is, I already replaced that)

SO I guess my question(s) is what is your thoughts on the smoking issue and what are my choices for the EGR valve (like other then cleaning the lines out)


Other then that...the car runs decent...idles fine, needs the rear springs put on still...and gets back gas mileage...(why I want to get everything fixed, hopefully it fixes the MPG...)

My SHO took about a week or two to rid off the smoke after the camshaft seals were replaced. The front cat had a lot of oil build up that took awhile to burn off.

DPFE sensor is the one you replaced already. Do a search for code 332 and nostrils, there's a thread I recall a year or two back that has photographs of the nostrils you need to clean inside the intake, which can be a cause of your code 332.

You're going to need to visually check your power steering system to identify any leaks. Have someone inside the vehicle with the engine running, and have them turn the steering wheel. A small pin hole leak in the pressure line will only squirt fluid when you're turning the wheels any, and can potentially hit the exhuast to cause smoke. If you don't fix the leak in time, it will get worse very quickly and literally "dump" fluid out of your line. This can be a reason you were losing so much PS fluid and don't seem to have smoke unless you're driving (turning the wheels).

I would suggest replacing the CV boot as soon as possible, you're going to hate doing a rear motor mount replacement or front 60k if it's the passenger side. If it's the drivers side, it's not so cool when you remove the transmission!

TYSHO's suggestions are right on. Do you see fluid under the car where it is parked? If it is leaking enough oil or PS fluid to smoke, there will usually be at least a small puddle. Another possibility is a cooling system leak depositing coolant on the exhaust. If you detect a sort of sweet odor in the smoke, it is coolant. A leaking water pump will do this. Oil or PS fluid smoke will have an acrid odor.

I have a suggestion too, get the DPFE sensor from FORD not Auto Zone, yeah it is more expensive but it will save you possible headaches. The Ford one is redisighned and you have to change plug connectors, and hard splice in with solder or butt connectors, I soldered mine in. The part even looks different...Just trying to help...Tom

As for puddles under the car, there are none. When I replaced the valve cover gasket, it rolled on me (the rear one) and leaked oil out. SO I am not sure if the oil accumulated somewhere and is slowly running down, or if there is a leak somewhere else (I already checked the valve cover and cam position seals, I am sure they are not leaking.

I also unhooked the power steering Res when I did the timing belt and CPS...(don't ask why I did that....I just wanted it out of my way.) but I am still unsure if there is a problem or not with the power steering, I am just going to have to keep my eye on it..

When I was under the car the other night, I try to grab whatever fluid was on the underside, but there was so little, that I couldn't tell if it was oil or PS fluid, (leaning more toward oil myself though.)

Right now though, I just took a pressure washer to the underside of the car, so there is nothing on there, so I will be able to check it again to see what is leaking.

as for the EGR, I have also thought about changing out the complete intake manifold, since I have a few lying around, and since the one on the car I know is pretty dirty, I just didn't want to loose my painted snakes.

Make sure you check your egr nostrils, mine were clogged full it took two cans of carb cleaner and a coat hanger but now no more 332 code. Matter of fact no CELs at all:woohoo:

Well, I finally found out whats leaking.....the Power steering system. not sure what exactly....but I will find out what it is, cause it scares me from all the smoke...

Now....does ford still carry the High pressure line for the PS system? if so, how much is it?

well, I finally got the Check engine light problem taken care of...the nostrils were completely clogged. ended up just putting a different intake manifold on...

and I looked into my smoking problem...neither Hose was wet, but the top of the PS pump was...so I just replaced the PS pump with one I had lying around and just re cleaned the frame rail and fire wall and will see if that did the trick or not..

PS pressure hose is available aftermarket. Rockauto or Advance Auto PN 71829 is what my '92 needed. The return hose you can rebuild by reusing the metal part and replacing the rubber with off the shelf bulk PS hose.
