What would thermostat that was installed with the jiggle valve at 9:00 instead of 12:00 do?

Probably just not bleed air out of the cooling system as fast as if they were at 12:00. It will probably still cool just fine, but having them at 12:00 allows the air to be worked out of the system much faster.

There is probably a bubble of air trapped on the upstream side of the thermostat. Not tragic, but not desireable either.

The reason I ask is my SHO was running a bit warm the other day (went all the way to N in city driving). It has always ran a bit warm (always gets to the bottom or top of M) but this time it just worried me, it never has reached the N before and hasn't since. It wasn't that warm outside. I run antifreez 50/50 mix, have recently changed my thermostat (and left it with the jiggle valve at 9:00 because I just put the new one in there how the old one was in there), have never replaced my electronic coolant tempurature sender (engine only has 9k on it).

What do you guys think?

It would only take you 15 minutes to move the thermostat from nine to noon so just give yourself some peace of mind and switch it. What brand of thermostat do you have in there? The Motorcraft thermostat has been proven to flow more coolant than aftermarket thermostats. Also at what temperature is your fan coming on? If the temperature is getting to the N and the fan doesn't come on then by all means replace your ACT sensor!

Oh, and don't rule out getting a new radiator. In my experience an old worn out radiator is usually at the root of most hot running problems.

Whether the needle is on the L or M or A or N doesn't mean squat unless you know what that actually means in degrees.

I bought a Infrared Surface Temp reader for less than $50.00 and it will tell you exactly what the temp is and you can then see what the letters mean wrt their calibration.

If you have fluctuation of the needle then this is a problem with the cooling system. Either there is air in the system, the radiator is clogged, the pump impeller is worn/corroded, the ECT is shot, the CCR fan relay is bad or the cooling passages have a mineral buildup.
