One of the advantages of tuning is that you can have more than one tune and you can apply that tune whenever you want, basically.

My question is: how does one tune for fuel economy as opposed to performance.

If I ever finish boosting my 90, I'll want to be able to run a daily driver tune that I'd use to commute to work that maximized fuel economy (at the cost of performance, obviously) and a performance tune that maximized horsepower at the cost of fuel economy.

So does the TwEECer handle the boost controller or do you run your tune and then set the boost to the appropriate level with a separate boost controller?

Yes, you would use a separate boost controller. You could run a slightly lean mixture for an 'economy' tune, but your best bet will be to modulate your right foot!

The only thing that will get you a good fuel economy tune is getting the fuel injectors and maf tuned spot on with a wideband O2 sensor. That and keep your foot out of it. Trying to make the car run lean probably won't work unless you mess with what the target afr is but it is probably best to not do that.

the obvious way to do that (and in one tune) would be to run more timing advance for part throttle when in closed loop, and less timing and more fuel for wot and open loop.

I haven't played with the tweecer, but SCT provides you with tables for spark advance based on rpm and imputed airflow, so you just adjust the timing in the various cells to give you best economy in closed loop with smaller throttle openings (which is where you tend to run during commute, if interested in economy) and make sure you have plenty of fuel and not so much timing in the cells for larger throttle openings.

92sho16 summed it up well; get it all scaled in. I wouldn't mess with timing and AFR's in the cruise range any time soon. Worry about getting it safe during WOT and for the most part, scaling injectors and MAF will satisfy 98% of what you're looking for.

OK. Love the input so far. More questions ensueing. Regarding wideband O2s. Does the Tweecer monitor those or do you monitor the temps and make adjustments to the tune afterward?

Maybe I'm not "up" on all this, but isn't SCT the flavor-of-the-month nowadays, and the Tweecer is yesterday's news?

Anyway, as with proper suspension dampening, there is really only "one" tune that is proper for all conditions. Sure, as with "adjustable" Konis or coilovers, you can play around the edges, but the optimal settings are really singular for all-around use.

Tweecer is outdated. Moates Quarterhorse is the beat tuner/datalogger you can get for our ECU's. It shows real time values unlike the TwEECer, cost less, and just overall around is better.

But the Moates does not have the capability to run more than one tune on a switch.

FWIW, my LGT (Subaru) also had the "adaptive learning mode" like Ford uses. When I would load my tune, it took about 100 miles of driving for it to be totally effective. Or a good 6-8 runs at the strip after driving 25 miles there.

The wideband O2 can be monitored by the tuner (tweecer/moates QH) one of two ways through a dataq or through the unused egr pin on the eec. The adjustments are based on what the afr is an a WOT run and what it should be or you can use EEC Analyzer to calculate your MAF curve and injector slopes. Have you checked out eectuning.org if not I recommend you spend some time over there, you will learn quite a bit over there.

TwEECer will show real-time values as well. If the TwEECer logged vBATT, I'd still be using it.

It does, but you have to put the switch in yourself.

OTS tune? That's typical. It just means that tune wasn't a perfect fit for your particular car.

You should be able to log with the rediculously expensive USB cable that PLX has (with a PLX wideband).
