Question about codes

If I have not gotten a check engine light, am I even going to get any codes? I know this sounds kinda dumb...but it was just something I have started to wonder. I am trying to pinpoint this blasted starting hesitation I consistently have.

You might have codes in your cpu that it stored when the light came on and you didn't notice. You can run them, you might come up with something. But when you say that your starting is hesitating; do you mean sometimes you have to crank and crank with no response? Or does it start and stall quickly?

The computer stores codes that don't require immediate attention without flashing the light. It is very possible that you may have codes.

CrazySHO, what I mean is the first thing you said. Sometimes I crank it, but it just turns over and over. I stop it for a moment and then it starts right up. I have replaced the fuel filter and I generally try to leave the key in the ON position for a few seconds before I try to start it. On occasion it does act like it starts and then it stall outs. After that happens it also just starts right up the next try.

I've tried to run the codes but the only one I made out seemed to be that I did the test wrong, I guess. I can't distinguish between all the flashes. I don't know how to figure out where one stops and another begins, Even after reading about how to do it.
