okay...let's say Subject A was in the process of changing a passenger front ABS sensor on his 98. thing is, Mr A was suffering from a rather severe migraine whilst attempting this repair, and by the time he was finished torching and digging the bad sensor out, he lacked the physical ability to torque down the sensor retaining bolt. he left it about 1/8" loose. prior to this, when the bad sensor was in place, the speedo would work for a lil bit after a cold start up, then drop out completely with a flashing O/D off light and badly misbehaving transmission. on first test drive after said migraine hindered repair attempt, the speedo would work up to around 35mph and then lose it's mind completely, bouncing everywhere snd the trans started acting completely diferent. is it possible that the hold down bolt for the sensor acts as a ground? hypotheticaly speaking, of course.

Its possible, but also there could be a chance the gap between sensor and ring could change as the sensor wiggles around. I know how those migranes can be.

I would think the problem is from the excessive gap between the sensor and tone ring. I have seen this before.

so tightening that bolt all the way and properly seating the sensor could solve all that ails?

just guessing here. The speedo on these things run thru the ABS module, right. Could it be possible the module is going nuts for some reason, when you go faster. I know mine speedo shuts down when I go for a high speed run.

The only code is a VSS fault caused by the ABS sensor not reading right. It's not he usual SHO speedo dropout...the speedo's not reading past 40mph, and the whole time it's wobbling around like a bad cable. The big problem is the signal being sent to the VSS is screwing with the trans causing it to shift all funky unless I unplug the ABS sensor and manually shift, which makes me lose the speedo and the use of 1st gear.

It shuts down around 115 or 120, right? That's a known problem for the '98 model year. Chris (Mr Anonymous) posted a fix in this thread.

SuperHO, you might want to check/change the wire mentioned in the thread I linked to. I know it sounds like you have a different problem, but stranger things have happened.
